At Thien Duc Nursing Home, I felt, for the first time, the true weight of war pressing on the human spirit. In the elders’ stories war always reigned. Some could only recall mountains climbed with rice on their backs, others of guerrilla nights that would never fade.
And yet, their pride glimmered when mentioning the children they raised, in the peace they nursed from rubbles. Seeing their content eyes, I understood Hegel’s words: Spirit attains self-consciousness only through struggle and overcoming opposition. From these stories bloomed Wish Lanterns: together, we painted hopes onto lanterns and let them light up the night sky, honoring lives of strength and the dreams they still carry.
